Note:
In Otranto city (Salento - Le), 813 inhabitants were killed by the Turks led by Gedik Ahmet Pasha, on 14 August 1480. The cause of this massacre was the refusal to convert to Islam after the fall of their city. The first to be beheaded was Antonio Primaldo. Tradition tells that his body remained on his feet, after being decapitated, despite the efforts of the executioners to bring it down, until the last of the Otrantini was martyred. Their remains are now preserved in the crypt of the Cathedral of Otranto and inspired the actor and playwright Carmelo Bene in his film masterpiece "Our Lady of the Turks."
